Extreme Bikes

Dalton Barney

People all around the world want a sport that will give them an adrenaline rush every time and is a challenge. Dirt biking is one of those sports, it is a true extreme sport. The very first dirt bike event took place in 1972 at the Los. Angeles colosseum. After the start of dirt bike racing it has grown every year and is now one of the top extreme sports. There are dirt bike cross country races and hill climbing but the most exhilarating is motocross. Some people ask “why is this an extreme sport?” It’s an extreme sport because you start in a gate drop with around 20 other riders and when the gate drops it’s a race to get and stay in first. You are in a stadium packed full of dirt riding against fast equally qualified riders that will do anything to take the lead. The stakes are very high and if you mess up you can break bones or even die! Their are people jumping over you and sometimes landing on top of you! You battle bar to bar through the track that is wanting to devour you like countless others and send you to the hospital. To even qualify for these dangerous races you have to place really good in other races and be one of the fastest riders out there. It takes years and years of practice time and dedication to even come close to qualifying to race with the best. Dirt biking is one of the top three most physically demanding sports out there. You have to hold onto a couple hundred pound bike and make it do what you want. Some people will say “all you do is just twist the throttle and turn.” Dirt biking is much more than that and only the most skilled can even take it to the highest level.

Skydiving

Skydiving is a crazy adrenaline packed sport there is so much that can go wrong but if it doesn’t it’s worth the risk. Some people just want to mark it off there list of thing to do before they die. Others just are what I call adrenaline junkys. Skydiving is a whole nother level of extreme. It is so extreme it sets off some chemicals in your body called serotonin and dopamine. It’s so crazy it sets chemicals off in your body.

Walking up to the airplane door, looking down and jumping out takes guts. One huge reward for taking the leap is quite simple you learn that you CAN.  This sense of empowerment gives us the courage to take big risks in life and in business. You jumped out of a plane, dropped through the sky, and landed on the ground.  Knowing that you DID that makes taking other risks seem so much smaller. You replay the big leap in your head every time you worry about taking a risk. Scared to make a move on your new crush? No big deal – you jumped out of a plane! Skydiving is an intimate sport, and not just because you have to get close and personal in the plane.  The intensity, intimacy and extreme celebrations of skydiving create a special bond between fellow jumpers.Image result for skydiving

If you don’t have tons of friends go skydiving and make some a be part of a family. How cool would you sound if you went into work the next week and said you went skydiving not a ton of people do it . When you start skydiving, you instantly become friends with the entire skydiving community, which, you will notice, is like one big family. Skydivers truly make great friends, and this fact alone is one of the main reasons we come back to our dropzone every weekend. Just go out and experience it.

Dirt Biking

by Gage Halford

Dirt biking goes back a long ways men and women have been enjoying it for years and as the sport has progressed so have the bikes. Through the progression of the sport bikes have evolved nowadays the suspension is so advanced that most the time you got a jump you can hardly feel the landing. Racing has also evolved back then going off the track was almost unheard of but now there’s a whole racing bracket for it. Racing the tracks has also evolved the tracks have evolved to longer and rougher and more physically demanding but with this advance in the tracks means the riders and equipment also has to advance. This means more training and better eating it also means more expensive bikes. On the flip side of it there’s a whole nother side to it which is freestyle. The freestyle scene is very popular from kids and adults going out to the dunes and seeing who can throw the biggest whip or see who can jump the farthest to full on big air competitions and seeing who can throw the biggest whip or even seeing who can do the most backflips or just seeing who can do the craziest truck flying hundreds of get through the air. With all the progression on the sport many wonder if it could get better well the answer to that is yes, more tricks are being invented every day. The bikes are also getting better through suspension and motors it makes you wonder will this extreme sport ever stop but one may never know.Image result for dirt biking

Extreme Ironing

by Sam Julander

You have heard about skydiving, wing suiting, scuba diving, but have you ever heard about extreme ironing? You heard me right. Extreme ironing is the sport of ironing your clothes in unlikely situations. According to the Extreme Ironing Bureau, extreme ironing is “the latest danger sport that combines the thrills of an extreme outdoor activity with the satisfaction of a well-pressed shirt.”

The history of extreme ironing started in the 1980s. The inventor Tony Hiam was inspired to create the extreme sport when he noticed that while camping, his brother in law would iron his clothes. Hiam’s goal from then on was to receive weird glances from people while ironing in unlikely places. Hiam would choose busy airport lounges, telephone kiosks, and other random places. His practical joke caught on and took a turn. Instead of airport lounges, people were ironing their clothes on rock faces, underwater, jumping out of planes.Image result for extreme ironing

Competition broke out. Who could be the best at ironing shirt? Soon it went international. Some famous feats included a man who climbed the summit of Mount Everest, with his ironing board in 2003. A world record of 5440 meters above sea level. In 2008 a team of 72 divers simultaneously dived underwater to compete in the sport, holding the world record for most extreme ironers underwater at once. In June of this year, a free diver dove 42 meters underwater and ironed his shirt, creating a world record for underwater freediving- ironing.

It’s funny how fast something as simple as ironing a shirt can become so dramatic. I don’t care what cool sport you do, you will never be as cool as Tony Hiam ironing his shirt.

24 Hours of Le Mans

By: Justin Garn

The 24 Hours of Le Mans is a race that has been going since 1923. Every year it takes place on June 16-17. In the le men all the racers drive for 24 hours no matter how many laps or pit stops you have. Currently, the most amount of wins by a single driver is Tom Kristensen. The most amount of wins to a team is Joest racing. The Le Mans is split up into 4 racing categories. LM P1, LM P2, LM GTE PRO, and LM GTE AM. All of those categories are split up into many different groups depending on the car they are using. Naming all of those would take forever though. The highest racing group in LM P1 is Toyota Gazoo Racing using the Toyota TS050 Hybrid. The best racers in that category were Sebastien Buemi, Kazuki Nakajima, and Fernando Alonso. The best car group in LM P2 placing 5th was Signatech Alpine Matmut using the Alpine A470 Gibson. Their racers were Nicolas Lapierre, Andre Negrao, and Pierre Thiriet. The best car group in LM GTE PRO was Porsche GT Team placing 15th with drivers Michael Christensen, Kevin Estre, and Laurens Vanthoor. The best car group in LM GTE AM was Dempsey Proton Racing placing 25th in the race with drivers Matt Campbell, Christian Ried, and Julien Andlauer. Some of these teams including Toyota Gazoo Racing and Porsche GT Team had big enough and good enough teams to take the top 2 places in their category. In total there were 60 racers, close to 1/3 racers did not even finish the race. This race is the most extreme race because it is the longest race in the world, not only testing the racers speed but endurance and maintaining the race car.Image result for 24 hour le mans

Whitewater rafting safety

by Trey Williams

White water rafting describes pushing a big inflatable raft down a big powerful stream, river, with a very strong current that will sweep you off your feet. It is impossible to stand up in the kind of rivers, even trying to swim in these strong currents, you wouldn’t last long. These rivers are so strong, a person without a life vest would get swept underneath the surface of the water, and the force and speed would make it almost impossible for anyone to survive in the harsh rapids.Image result for white water rafting

While participating in this high adrenaline, fast pace, and also dangerous sport you must take precautions, so that you can keep yourself and everyone with you safe. First and foremost when dealing with conditions like these, it should be common sense to be wearing a life jacket at all times when in the raft or near the water. Wearing life vests help you stay above the water so you don’t get sucked underneath the swift current. Depending on the river you decide to float, there could be hazardous obstacles in your path; like boulders, rocks, low hanging branches, steep walls. To protect you from head injuries, you should always wear a helmet to prevent your head from bashing into dangerous objects along the river, no matter what skill level you are. Always stay in the boat at all times, and pay attention to what is going on, and what lays ahead in the river.

You must know that you are not the only one in the boat so you cannot be fooling around or dozing off, while there high pressure, very intense situations going on all around you. You have to do your part and pull your weight. Whitewater rafting is a very fun and engaging sport, that you don’t want to live your life without trying it at least once.

I Tried Skiing but it made me Board: The Superiority of Snowboarding

by Emily Curtis

If you’ve ever been involved in winter sports, you know the adrenaline rush of racing down a mountain’s face. Image result for snowboardingThe wind rushing past your helmet. The snow cascading about as you glide through. The view of the surrounding mountains as you crest the steepest hills. And of course, the snowboarders carving deep gashes into the snow, barreling past you like gorillas trying to escape the bindings attached to their feet.

3sAt least, that’s how the stereotype goes. Let’s hope you’re near a winter sports shop at the end of this article though because you’ll want to go swap out those dingy skis for a freshly waxed board.

With a snowboard at your side (or more accurately, under your feet), your days spent on the mountain can be focused on the adventure rather than the gear. No need to worry about losing a pole, all you need to worry about is getting that jump just right or maneuvering down the face. Snowboarding boots are also statistically shown to be more comfortable. You’re no more likely to see a snowboarder struggling up the lodge steps alongside the tight-booted skiers than you are to see one swap their board in after giving snowboarding a try.

Remember those deep gashes snowboarders are known to make in the hills? Well imagine creating them rather than stumbling through! A snowboard is built to help you maneuver through deep powder and leave your mark doing it; something that a dainty pair of skis can’t do quite the same even on a professional.

The skills you gain skiing can help you with other sports; as long as that sport is water skiing. Compare that to a snowboard, where the tricks you learn on the slopes can transfer over to your wakeboarding, longboarding, skateboarding, and surfing skills too. Indeed, the practice you gain during the snowy months can you help you in the remaining three.

Another great thing about snowboarding is that a fall is less likely to take you out than it would be with your feet strapped to skis. All you need to do after a wipeout is brush off and carry on, your board still securely strapped to your feet. Your days of chasing a runaway ski pole or ski after a crash are over, as are your instances of knee pain after a fun day on the slopes. With your feet connected to the same surface area, twisting falls are much more uncommon. It’s not unusual for older winter sports enthusiasts to make the switch to snowboarding since their legs can’t handle the strain of skis any longer. It’s a switch that I would suggest to all of our readers, too.

So hopefully the next time you hit the slopes, you can look at the snowboarders with jealousy rather than disgust. And hopefully the next time you look down at your feet, you’ll see a snowboard rather than a pair of skis.
